Travel or no?

Postby amcdougall on Mon Mar 08, 2010 8:24 am

This one is a little difficult to describe but I will do my best. I have been asking around for a couple weeks now and I have been getting some conflicting answers so I thought I would post it here.

A1 is dribbling the ball.
He bounces the ball once... and Jumps
Collects the ball in the air...
Lands on his RIGHT foot...
jumps again... and lands on his RIGHT foot (His left foot has not touched the ground)
and shoots.

Travel or no?

In my game I decided this was legal. To me it was no different had he come down on his other foot (aka normal layup) and there was no unfair advantage gained by this athletic display..... Thoughts?

I would rule this a travel. The player is progressing with the ball while dribbling. he jumps and and lands on hiis right foot which is now his povit foot. He jumps and lamds on his right foot again to res-establish the same foot as a pivot. I would rule this a travel because he has re-established the pivot foot.

This play is a violation.
As per Article 25.2.1

Establishing a pivot foot for a player who catches a live ball on the playing
court:
• While standing with both feet on the floor:
▬ The moment one foot is lifted, the other foot becomes the pivot foot.

• While moving:
▬ If one foot is touching the floor, that foot becomes the pivot foot.
▬ If both feet are off the floor and the player lands on both feet simultaneously,
the moment one foot is lifted, the other foot becomes the pivot foot.
▬ If both feet are off the floor and the player lands on one foot, then that foot
becomes the pivot foot. If a player jumps off that foot and comes to a stop
landing on both feet simultaneously, then neither foot is a pivot foot.

The key to this wording is that the player MUST LAND ON BOTH FEET SIMULTANEOUSLY in order to be a legal play.
