Matt Kallio becomes First Canadian NBA Referee
Matt refereed community basketball as a junior high student in Edmonton. Following a hiatus through his high school and post-secondary years, he joined the EBOA to referee again following the 2006-2007 season (when he played basketball at Grant MacEwan College). His motivation was to stay connected to the game, and he enjoyed seeing former coaches, teammates, opponents and friends in the gym. He never imagined at the time that it was possible to become a professional referee.
On Monday, January 18, 2021 Matt refereed an NBA game between the San Antonio Spurs and the Portland Trail Blazers in Portland (the Spurs won 124 - 105). He not only made history by becoming the first Canadian to referee an NBA regular season game, he also opened an avenue for young men and women to pursue a professional officiating career.
The EBOA and the City of Edmonton are proud of their native son. Well done Matt.
